Then Moses
asked God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them: The God of your fathers
has sent me to you, and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ what should I tell
them?” God
replied to Moses, …This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent
me to you.” …This is My name forever; this is how I am to
be remembered in every generation. Exodus 3:13-15
I was listening to Jonathan Cahn the other day and he
said something interesting I had not thought of before. He was discussing the name of God in the
Bible. When Moses asked God who he
should tell the Children of Israel had sent him to them, God told Moses to tell
them “I Am has sent me to you.” Cahn
pointed out that whenever we begin a sentence by saying “I am …” we are
basically saying God’s name. Every
sentence we speak that starts from our personal perspective, starts by
proclaiming first the name of Almighty God.
“I am happy” is like saying “God…I’m happy,” or “I am angry” would be
“God…I feel anger.”
In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. He was in the beginning with
God. All things came into being by Him,
and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. John 1:1-3
Any emotion or action that we put into words as
personally experiencing or performing first proclaims the name of God. Whatever that experience is…I am tired,
hungry, lonely, content, walking, falling, jumping, sleeping, or eating. Because of God, we exist to experience that
emotion, or perform that action. Without
Him there is nothing, no action, no experiencing. All things came into being by Him.
When it was day, the Council
of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, …And they
all said, “Are You the
Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “Yes, I am.” Luke 22:66-70
Jesus, when standing before the Chief Priests and scribes
was asked accusingly “Are you the Son of God!”
Jesus answered them by saying “Yes, I Am.” Jesus is the perfect example of being
obedient to God’s will. For our Lord, it
meant being obedient even unto death, a horrible death on the cross as an
innocent. Don’t mislead yourself, Jesus
was fully God, but He was also fully man.
He prayed fervently with drops of sweat like blood flowing to the ground
that “this cup would be removed from Him” and that “this hour would pass from
me.” However, He also prayed that God’s
will would be done, and not His. Jesus
is our perfect example of being obedient and placing God and His will for our
life first.
No foul language is to come from your mouth,
but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace
to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29
Your speech should always be gracious,
seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person. Colossians 4:6
Being a Christ Follower consists of daily removing
ourselves from the throne of our life, and placing the Lord on our throne. We die to self and put away the old man, we
become a new creation. The focus of our
life changes from me (self-focused) to Him (God-focused). Whenever we say “I am…” we are voicing
something solely from our own perspective.
If we remember that whenever we say “I am…” we are basically saying
God’s name first, we may tend to speak in a more Christ-like manner. It becomes harder to say “I am going to hurt
you,” “I am sick of you,” or “I am not
able to help you.”
