A New Beginning: New Year's Day and God's Covenants

January 1st... what exactly makes it different than any other day?  The sun rises and sets, there are still 24 hours in it, and there are eleven other months that have a first day too.  But, New Year's Day is special.  It marks the start of a new year, a new beginning.  Resolutions are made, goals are set, the past is behind us and the new year is filled with potential.

In the Bible, there are also new beginnings full of potential.  Genesis begins with "In the beginning...” and goes on to describe the creation of the universe and everything in it.  God creates Adam and Eve, and enters into a covenant with them (Edenic Covenant).  God created Adam and Eve and placed them in the Garden to tend it, to multiply, and to rule over everything in the Earth.

Genesis 1:28-30
And God blessed them: and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food: and to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to everything that creeps upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for food: and it was so.

Genesis 2:15-17
And Jehovah God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die.

Hosea 6:7
But they like Adam have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.

Adam and Eve are in the garden and sin enters into the story.  They disobey God and because of sin are cast out of the Garden.  This results in another new beginning, one that is less than perfect (Adamic Covenant).

Genesis 3:14-19
And Jehovah God said unto the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon your belly shall you go, and dust shall you eat all the days of your life: and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed: he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply your pain and your conception; in pain you shall bring forth children; and your desire shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over you. And unto Adam he said, Because you have hearkened unto the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it: cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil shall you eat of it all the days of your life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to you; and you shall eat the herb of the field; in the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return unto the ground; for out of it were you taken: for dust you are, and unto dust shall you return.

Mankind continues to do what they see as right in their own eyes until God has had enough.  God decides to destroy everything on the Earth, but to preserve the lives of Noah, his family, and animals.  Noah builds an ark, which God uses to save Noah and his family from a world-wide flood.  Noah and all those in the ark are delivered, and God makes a covenant with Noah never to destroy mankind with a flood again (Noahic Covenant).  This results in another new beginning, one that is meant to reset this world from the evil that had overtaken it.

Genesis 9:1-17
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every bird of the heavens; with all wherewith the ground teems, and all the fishes of the sea, into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; as the green herb have I given you all. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. And surely your blood, the blood of your lives, will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it: and at the hand of man, even at the hand of every man's brother, will I require the life of man. Whoso sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein. And God spoke unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that go out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of the flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud, and I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

Later, God chooses another man, Abram of Ur.  God tells Abram to gather his family, his household, and all his belongings, and travel to a new land which He would show him.  Abram leaves all he knows and travels to an unknown place.  God tells Abram that he will give him a land, will increase his offspring, and will make him into a great nation.  He changes Abram's name to Abraham, and his wife Sarai's name to Sarah.  God establishes a covenant with Abraham (Abrahamic Covenant) and creates a people of His own, Israel.  This results in another new beginning, one that sets apart a people for God and moves mankind one step closer to being reconciled with God, their Creator.

Genesis 12:1-3 Now Jehovah said unto Abram, Get you out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your father's house, unto the land that I will show you: and I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and be you a blessing: and I will bless them that bless you, and him that curses you will I curse: and in you shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Genesis 12:7  And Jehovah appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto your seed will I give this land: and there built an altar unto Jehovah, who appeared unto him.

Genesis 13:14-17 And Jehovah said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward: for all the land which you see, to you will I give it, and to your seed for ever. And I will make your seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then may your seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for unto you will I give it.

Genesis 22:15-18 And the angel of Jehovah called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven, and said, By myself have I sworn, says Jehovah, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, that in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because you have obeyed my voice.

Israel prospers and grows over time, and then become slaves to the Pharaoh in Egypt.  God selects Moses to deliver His people from their bondage.  Through a series of plagues brought on Egypt, Israel is set free and departs Egypt.  God leads them to Mt. Sinai and there gives Moses the Ten Commandments and plans for the tabernacle which will allow God to dwell with His people.  A covenant (Mosaic Covenant) is established that promises if His people will obey, He will be their God.  This new beginning allows a means by which God can once again tabernacle, or dwell, with his people.

Exodus 19:3-8 And Moses went up unto God, and Jehovah called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be mine own possession from among all peoples: for all the earth is mine: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak unto the children of Israel. And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which Jehovah commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said, All that Jehovah has spoken we will do. And Moses reported the words of the people unto Jehovah.

Deuteronomy 30:1-10 And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you shall call them to mind among all the nations, whither Jehovah your God has driven you, and shall return unto Jehovah your God, to all that I command you this day, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul; that then Jehovah your God will turn your captivity, and have compassion upon you, and will return and gather you from all the peoples, whither Jehovah your God has scattered you. If any of your outcasts be in the uttermost parts of heaven, from thence will Jehovah your God gather you: and Jehovah your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and he will do you good, and multiply you above your fathers. And Jehovah your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live. And Jehovah your God will put all these curses upon your enemies, and on them that hate you, that persecuted you. And you shall return and obey the voice of Jehovah, and do all his commandments which I command you this day. And Jehovah your God will make you plenteous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, for good: for Jehovah will again rejoice over you for good, as he rejoiced over your fathers; if you shall obey the voice of Jehovah your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law; if you turn unto Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul.

God delivers the Israelite's through 40 years of wandering in the wilderness to the land which had been promised to Abraham and allows them to possess the land.  There they become established and prosper once again, until they once again become discontent and cry out to God for a King to rule over them like other nations.  God establishes a covenant with Israel to provide them with a King (Davidic Covenant).  This results in Israel’s first King, Saul, and a second, David, from whom the Messiah will come.

I Chronicles 17:10-14 Moreover I tell you that Jehovah will build you a house. And it shall come to pass, when your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your seed after you, who shall be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my loving-kindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before you; but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom for ever; and his throne shall be established for ever.

Israel over time forsakes the one true God for other false gods.  They are unable of course to keep the commandments and follow the Law God gave them.  God’s people are lost with no way of restoring their relationship with God.  God provides a way by sending His only Son, Jesus Christ, the long-awaited Messiah that will return mankind to a right relationship with their Creator, God.  Jesus comes and through his sacrificial death on the cross for all our sins, establishes a covenant (New Covenant) which through His blood covers our transgressions and puts us in right-standing with God once again.  A new beginning is now available for all who repent and follow Jesus.  The ultimate new beginning.

Jeremiah 31:31-34 Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband unto them, says Jehovah. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Jehovah: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Jehovah; for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, says Jehovah: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.

Matthew 26:26-28  While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

Hebrews 9:15  For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

New beginnings are a time of potential.  What will this New Year bring for you?  Will you look for opportunities for change, growth, and new experiences?  Will you grow closer to your Creator God, or will you chase after your own desires, and your own self-serving plans?  God desires a closer relationship with you.  Will you use this “new beginning” of a New Year to obey Him, seek Him, and follow Him?
